Knife attack in China leaves multiple people injured

A knife attack in Guangzhou, China, left multiple people injured on Monday evening. Guangzhou police received reports of a man wielding a knife and injuring pedestrians in the Panyu district, according to a police statement. Emergency services were alerted around 5:20pm local time, and police quickly arrived on the scene. The injured were taken to the hospital for treatment, none of whom were in life-threatening condition after receiving medical attention.

A 35-year-old male suspect, surnamed Li, was apprehended by the police. The incident occurred near a university park complex on Xiaoguwei Island, which is home to several major universities. Earlier on Monday, online posts circulated about a knife attack at a mall in Panyu’s Guangzhou University City, showing several injured individuals and the presumed assailant wearing a face mask.

Some online posts suggested there were multiple attackers, but this information has yet to be confirmed. CCTV footage posted online showed a man in black stabbing a woman in the face inside a shopping center, with another woman seen later on the ground being comforted by passersby. Other videos depicted the aftermath of another attack, with an older woman sitting outside covered in blood, screaming for help as the knife-wielding suspect appeared to target her face and eyes.

Some videos were removed from Chinese social media platforms, but others posted on Western platforms remain visible.
