Karachi sizzles at a September high of 40.3 degrees Celsius

Karachi sweltered under a record-breaking heatwave on Sunday, with temperatures soaring to a scorching 40.3 degrees Celsius, the Met Office announced. This marked the highest temperature ever recorded in the city during the month of September. In other parts of Sindh, Shaheed Benazirabad topped the charts at 42 degrees, closely followed by Chhor and Mithi, both hitting 41.5 degrees.

Mirpurkhas and Sakrand also experienced high temperatures, with readings of 41 and 40 degrees Celsius respectively. Larkana, Moenjodaro, Khairpur, Dadu, Hyderabad Airport, and Thatta all recorded 39.5 degrees, while Jacobabad, Hyderabad city, and Tandojam reported 39 degrees. Further down south, Padidan saw a temperature of 38 degrees, Sukkur 37.5 degrees, Maripur 35.5 degrees, and Badin reaching 35 degrees.

Rohri recorded a temperature of 39 degrees. The monsoon low that had been lingering over South Chhattisgarh had moved west-northwestward, bringing with it the potential for dust-thunderstorm rains in certain regions. This weather system was predicted to bring dusty thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall, particularly in Tharparker, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, and Tando Muhammad Khan, from September 14 to 15.

Light to moderate dust-thunderstorm rain was also expected in Sanghar, Khairpur, Hyderabad, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, and Jamshoro from September 14 to 15, with occasional interruptions. Karachi itself was expected to remain hot and humid into Monday, with temperatures potentially peaking between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius and humidity levels hovering around 75-85 percent.

On Tuesday, the city was forecast to remain similarly hot and humid, with temperatures ranging from 35 to 37 degrees Celsius and humidity levels between 70-80 percent.
