Kaduna to extend KASU salary deal to other tertiary institutions

The Kaduna State Government plans to extend concessions on salaries to other tertiary institutions within the state, following recent agreements made with academic staff at Kaduna State University (KASU). Discussions with relevant unions in these institutions are set to commence, as part of efforts to address their concerns and improve working conditions.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Education, Prof. Sani Sambo, who disclosed this at the 2025 Barewa Old Boys Association’s Annual General Meeting, said the governor has established a nine-member tertiary institutions negotiation committee to facilitate these talks. KASU was the initial focus of the negotiations due to industrial actions involving university staff.

The implementation of the KASU agreement is expected to commence with the October salary cycle, while negotiations with other institutions will determine the specific arrangements applicable to them. The state government has prioritized education, particularly basic and secondary education, in its development agenda, allocating approximately 25% of its budget to education in each of the past three budget cycles.

Efforts to integrate out-of-school children have seen significant success, with the number decreasing from over 500,000 to around 300,000 since the current administration took office. The government is also working with development partners to incorporate Almajiri education into the formal system and has invested in vocational and technical education through the establishment of an Institute of Vocational Skills Training.

About 4,050 graduates have acquired vocational skills through this program. The commissioner urged stakeholders to continue supporting the government's policies and programmes, emphasizing the importance of skills development in driving economic growth.
