Indonesia extends search for missing journalists on volcano mission

Indonesian rescuers have extended their search for a missing group of eight people, including five journalists, who went missing a week ago in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra. The journalists were on a mission to capture images and footage of Mount Anak Krakatau's eruption, which caused widespread destruction by blanketing nearby cities in volcanic ash and forcing the closure of several airports.

The missing group consisted of two crew members and a guide, and they embarked on their journey from an area west of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on September 7. However, they lost contact with the outside world shortly after leaving the coast. Despite extensive search efforts, no trace of the missing individuals has been found yet.

Al Amrad, the head of the local search and rescue agency, confirmed that results of the operation remain inconclusive, stating that the search will continue for another three days. Meanwhile, a male body was discovered on Enggano island, a distance of over 350km from the volcano. Authorities are awaiting the outcome of tests to ascertain if the deceased was one of the missing individuals.

The incident highlights the frequent marine accidents in the Southeast Asian archipelago, attributed to substandard safety measures and unpredictable weather conditions. Indonesia, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is prone to high levels of volcanic and seismic activity due to the interaction of tectonic plates.
