How an oil-supply crisis could bring about an investment boom

The oil industry has witnessed a shift in fortunes this year, with prices soaring to triple digits amid the Gulf war. This has sparked concerns of an impending investment boom as oil companies scramble to make the most of their newfound wealth. Since the beginning of 2026, shares in oil-and-gas businesses have surged by 40%, outpacing the 12% increase seen in broader listed companies.

The combined profits of the top seven integrated oil companies and Saudi Arabia's Aramco more than doubled in the second quarter, reaching a staggering $91 billion.

Rather than reinvesting the windfall into new projects, oil firms have largely focused on debt reduction and rewarding shareholders. Major players such as ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, and TotalEnergies have trimmed their combined net debt by $36 billion, or nearly 20%, in the second quarter of 2026 alone. Smaller firms have also been aggressive in cutting debt. Dividend payouts have been either maintained or increased, with some companies offering recurring dividends.

However, there is now a renewed focus on expanding oil reserves. The depletion of oilfields costs the world about one Saudi Arabia's worth of crude supply every two years, and the inability to discover new fields efficiently is becoming increasingly problematic. Production could fall by nearly a fifth by 2040, necessitating a revival in exploration and investment.

Firms are adopting innovative strategies to find new assets. Rather than bidding for traditional licenses, they are amassing vast tracks of land and using artificial intelligence to scan for potential drilling sites. Farm-down deals between national oil companies and foreign majors have also become more prevalent, as governments seek to bolster domestic production.

Exploration efforts are being focused on various geographic locations, including deepwater plays in the South Atlantic and uncharted basins in countries such as Uruguay, Vietnam, and Papua New Guinea.
