House Democrat pushes global effort on AI rules

House Democrats have circulated a letter urging President Donald Trump to spearhead an international effort to establish global AI rules, according to a copy obtained by Semafor. In a draft letter set to be sent later this week, Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., urges the administration to lead a coordinated international framework for AI development, engaging allies like the European Union and competitors such as China.

The letter mirrors concerns over AI's capabilities, comparing the push for global rules to past US-led initiatives on nuclear power and aviation. With President Trump set to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the timing of this push is notable; however, it appears unlikely that Trump's administration would willingly cede competitive ground by playing a role in AI policy.

Earlier this week, Trump dismissed calls from tech leaders for a slowdown in AI development, emphasizing the need to outpace China. The White House's typical stance on international AI matters has been to avoid global governance, with science adviser Michael Kratsios last year rejecting centralized control and governance of AI at the UN.

Despite this, the upcoming AI discussions at the Trump-Xi meeting and the UN General Assembly could test whether the administration has shifted its stance on AI regulation.
