Historical Nehru Park to be restored to its full glory

LAHORE: The Punjab Horticulture Authority (PHA) is set to restore Nehru Park, a historical site in the Krishan Nagar area of Lahore, to its former grandeur. On December 31, 1929, India's Indian National Congress adopted its Purna Swaraj resolution at the park during its Lahore session. The resolution called for complete independence from British rule, rejecting their offer of dominion status under the 1929 Irwin Declaration.

Jawaharlal Nehru, the Congress president at the time, unfurled the Indian flag at the site to signify the declaration. The park also played a role in the nationwide movement for independence that led to the January 26, 1930 Declaration of Independence.

PHA Director General Ahmad Usman Javaid revealed that the restoration will include horticulture and engineering works. The horticulture team will introduce lush green grass, colorful seasonal flowers, decorative fountains, and repair the boundary wall. Meanwhile, engineers will install night lights, benches, children's swings, and a cricket pavilion to make the park more family-friendly.

Javaid stated, "Nehru Park is not just a public park but a site of historical importance, and it is our responsibility to preserve its character while restoring it as a vibrant green space for the citizens."

This project is part of a larger initiative to restore and renovate over 800 smaller community parks under the PHA's jurisdiction in Lahore. Students and civil society groups will actively participate in the restoration process.
