‘Goodbye, Malaysia. I wish you well’ — Malaysian gives up his citizenship for Singapore after losing faith in M’sia politicians; praises SG govt and its progress in delivering its promises

Once a proud Malaysian, a Redditor shared on Reddit’s r/malaysianow that he had relinquished his Malaysian citizenship for Singapore after growing disillusioned with his country's political landscape. In two posts published on August 27 and September 4, the man detailed his journey from a patriotic young Malaysian to a Singapore resident who praised his new home's governance.

Born into a family that valued politics and current affairs, the individual's fascination with current affairs blossomed into political activism during his Form 5 years. He even attended a BERSIH rally and experienced tear gas for the first time. As a university student, he was actively involved in political campaigns and protests, believing that change was possible.

However, his optimism waned as Malaysia faced a shift in government and witnessed politicians he knew from PKR and DAP embracing policies they had previously opposed. He was particularly disillusioned by the lack of determination to pursue reforms, as well as controversial incidents such as the KK socks controversy and the closure of a shop displaying an upside-down Malaysian flag.

Despite these setbacks, the man never lost his love for Malaysia, relying on his father's words to remind him of the importance of remembering one's roots. His relationship with Singapore began as a simple curiosity, but it deepened as he learned about Singapore's efficient government and resource management. After graduating from university, he worked in Petaling Jaya, frustrated by daily traffic congestion.

Ultimately, he moved to Singapore to work in a food-ingredients wholesaler, where he appreciated the city's public transportation system and work-life balance.
