Gold Fields Gives 150 Tertiary Students Four-Year Lifeline

At the Akoon Club House in Tarkwa, the scholarship award ceremony for Gold Fields Ghana Foundation's beneficiaries was a moment of pride, relief, and renewed hope for many parents. Dr Celestine Allotey, Vice President of Community Relations, welcomed the 150 tertiary students - including 86 females - who had been awarded scholarships by the Foundation.

Each recipient would receive support for the next four years, with an annual package of GH¢10,500, which comprises GH¢9,500 for school fees and accommodation, plus a GH¢1,000 stipend.

For George Kwame Afenyo, a former beneficiary, the scholarship meant more than just financial aid. He spoke passionately about how the support helped him overcome his fear of not being able to pursue the education he once thought might be out of reach. Afenyo recounted a period after secondary school when he desperately wanted to continue his education but lacked the financial means.

He even went to a work site hoping to earn money to support his studies, only to witness an explosion involving dynamite, which made him realize that he could not continue putting himself in such dangerous situations.

The scholarship changed the course of Afenyo's life. Despite having been admitted to a tertiary institution, he faced another major obstacle in the form of the cost of admission and other educational expenses. However, the announcement of the scholarship from Gold Fields Ghana Foundation provided him with the opportunity to take advantage of his admission and fulfill his dream of becoming a renowned accountant.
