Ghana, China agree to tighten crackdown on illegal mining

Ghana and China have reached an agreement to strengthen their joint efforts in combating illegal mining activities. Both nations pledged to ensure that Chinese companies and nationals operating within Ghana adhere strictly to the local laws and regulations. This pact was concluded between Ghana's Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, and China's Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Sun Shuxian, during the sidelines of the 2026 China Mining Conference held in Tianjin, China.

Minister Buah disclosed that this cooperation aims to establish a framework for managing Chinese nationals engaged in illegal mining while encouraging responsible engagement in Ghana's mining industry. He emphasized the significance of this collaboration in addressing critical aspects of the natural resources sector. "This includes working closely with them to enforce stringent standards and ensure efficient policing of Chinese companies operating in Ghana," Minister Buah stated.

According to the agreement, individuals found guilty of breaching Ghana's laws would face penalties in the country. Concurrently, Chinese authorities are expected to take corresponding actions against their nationals violating the laws. The cooperation will also encompass various areas such as green mining technology, environmental protection, technology transfer, and geological mapping.

China has suggested the use of satellite remote sensing, airborne geophysical surveys, joint laboratories, and technical exchanges to bolster their partnership. Furthermore, both countries have agreed to set up a technical team tasked with overseeing the implementation of these commitments and ensuring that the agreed-upon measures lead to tangible outcomes.
