Gambia bans protests without permits after unrest over power cuts

Gambia's police chief has declared that no further protests will be permitted without permits following multiple nights of demonstrations against prolonged power cuts. Inspector General Seedy Mukhtar Touray made the announcement, stating that any violation of the new rule would be met with force. The unrest erupted amid President Adama Barrow's re-election campaign, with citizens expressing frustration over the ongoing power shortages during the peak heat of the year.

Police Commissioner Touray highlighted that during the disturbances, a police station was damaged and detainees were unlawfully released. The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) reported that three of its branches were destroyed following attacks, causing significant damage to buildings, infrastructure, and equipment.

A total of 11 individuals have been arrested in connection with the vandalism. In response to the protests, opposition candidate Talib Ahmed Bensouda acknowledged the public's concerns. He noted that the extreme heat made it difficult for people to carry out basic tasks, leading some to take their grievances to the streets. While Bensouda did not condone the protests, he empathized with the populace's plight.

NAWEC reported an unexpected surge in electricity demand during peak hours, attributing it to soaring temperatures. Gambia's president visited NAWEC facilities on Tuesday, assuring the public that new generators would be installed, and power would be restored by the end of October. The government had also contracted for a 50-MW solar power plant, but opposition leader Bensouda criticized Barrow for relying heavily on imported energy, making the nation vulnerable to global supply interruptions.
