FSSAI recalls coriander powder and Carrageenan over safety concerns: ‘Submitted sample was unsafe’

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recalled two food products, coriander powder and carrageenan, due to safety concerns. Lab tests revealed that a sample of coriander powder from Shalimar's Chef brand contained unsafe pesticide residues, while the carrageenan sample failed to meet cadmium standards. FSSAI mandated an immediate market recall of these products, which must adhere to the FSS (Food Recall Procedure) Regulations, 2017.

A regulatory sample of the coriander powder was found unsatisfactory in terms of pesticide residues, failing to comply with the FSS (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 and the FSS (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2022. Dietician Kanikka Malhotra explained that pesticide residues on coriander cannot be determined by taste or smell, as it is a crop that can absorb residues during farming.

Carrageenan, a seaweed-derived thickener, can make food products like ice cream, flavoured milk, and paneer substitutes smoother. While the FSSAI did not declare carrageenan or coriander powder dangerous, the recall was prompted by one specific batch containing cadmium and pesticide levels exceeding permissible limits. Malhotra emphasized that consistent exposure to excessive pesticide residue over time can negatively impact the liver, hormones, and nervous system.

The recall applies only to this particular batch; however, she advised consumers to check ingredient labels for carrageenan (E407) and choose pre-packaged, trusted sources for coriander powder to minimize potential risks.
