Former minister Jamil Khir appears in KL court over Tabung Haji RCI charges

Former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom appeared in a Kuala Lumpur court on September 14 to face charges linked to the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report concerning the Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH). Dressed in a white shirt and a black suit, Jamil Khir made his way to the court at 7:40 am.

The case against the former Jerai Member of Parliament is set to be mentioned before Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad at 9 am. On September 10, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman disclosed that the commission had recommended three charges against Jamil Khir under Section 403 of the Penal Code for the offence of dishonest misappropriation of property.

After a seven-day remand period starting on September 2, Jamil Khir was released on bail on September 8. Prior to his court appearance, the former minister was detained at 4:30 pm on September 2 and was present at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to provide a statement in aid of the investigation into revelations from the TH RCI report.

The RCI report was made public on July 29 and detailed various management and operational deficiencies at TH between 2014 and 2020, as well as identifying problematic investments requiring a forensic audit. The report also highlighted suspicious transactions and the concealment of information.
