Eagles' special teams shines in loss to No. 11 South Dakota | EWU notebook

VERMILLION, S.D. — In a 41-23 defeat to South Dakota at the DakotaDome, Eastern Washington's special teams units showcased impressive performance. Freshman Morgan Dodson's successful onside kick was recovered by redshirt senior Wesley Garrett. Senior Soren McKee contributed with a 40-yard field goal, while freshman Jaxon Bell assumed return duties, providing Eastern's offense with shorter fields.

Graduating senior Malik Dotson praised Jaxon Bell, calling him a "dog" who exemplifies the Bell brothers' genetic potential. Bell returned four kickoffs for 95 yards and a punt for 31 yards, as well as two rushing attempts for 16 yards. Despite a few missteps, including a lost fumble and a 5-yard loss on a catch, Bell contributed positively to the team's special teams.

Sophomore safety Bryce Smith continued to stand out for the Eagles, recording 13 tackles, all solo, and an interception. The interception occurred during a play-action pass at the goal line, marking his first career interception in three starts. Smith's performance led the defense with 30 tackles, three shy of team leader Myles Mayovsky.

However, the Eagles struggled with tackling during the game, falling behind South Dakota multiple times on passing plays. Injuries continued to plague the Eagles' wide receiver position, with two more players leaving the game hurt. Sophomore Sean Embree Jr. made his college debut with a 12-yard catch, but left with a trainer due to injury.

Sophomore David Cabrera was also injured, requiring medical attention after absorbing a hit. Freshman Oliver Luebkert made his debut with two catches for 14 yards, while sophomore Rylin Lang set a new career high with five receptions for 54 yards. Redshirt sophomore Bode Gardner and starters Jaxon Branch and Drew Carlson are awaiting their season debuts and recovery from injuries, respectively.
