Doctors face life sentence over Greek pop star's death

A Greek pop star, Giorgos Mazonakis, died on September 9 after a plasma exchange treatment at a clinic, raising suspicions among prosecutors who have upgraded the charges against the two doctors involved. The pair, who are romantically linked, are facing possible life sentences for manslaughter with intent, a charge that could lead to up to 20 years in prison.

Police claim the doctors attempted to conceal crucial evidence during their investigation. The pathologist who operates the clinic and his wife, a non-specialist doctor, deny any wrongdoing, stating that Mazonakis lost consciousness prior to the treatment. Plasma exchange, a procedure used for various medical conditions, has also gained popularity for anti-ageing and longevity treatments.

The clinic, registered as a pathology practice, illegally possessed two plasma exchange devices, with one in operation for 42 minutes while Mazonakis was present. Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis acknowledged the lack of regulations governing such clinics in Greece. Mazonakis, 54, was a renowned Greek musician with numerous chart-topping hits and platinum albums over a three-decade career. A concert to celebrate his life was scheduled for September 20.
