DNV and HD KSOE to collaborate on assurance frameworks for Software Defined Vessel technologies

Two maritime industry giants, DNV and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), have announced a strategic collaboration to advance Software Defined Vessel (SDV) technologies and associated assurance frameworks. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed during Gastech between Kim Hyung-Kwan, President and CEO of HD KSOE, and Vidar Dolonen, DNV's Regional Manager for Korea & Japan, establishes a partnership leveraging both companies' expertise.

HD KSOE plans to develop and innovate SDV technologies on a software-centric platform that can enhance digital transformation of vessel operations, improving flexibility, lifecycle management, and future digital capabilities. DNV, on the other hand, will provide independent assurance for these technologies using its expertise in verification, certification, and assurance of maritime technologies.

The collaboration is expected to span core areas such as sharing knowledge and experience to bolster DNV's role in independent assurance for software-enabled maritime technologies. It may also include pilot projects, demonstrations, and engagement with industry stakeholders. Additionally, the parties will explore lifecycle assurance approaches for SDV technologies currently deployed on vessels, addressing software updates and changes throughout the asset's life cycle.

The MOU aims to extend through the end of 2030. Kim Hyung-Kwan expressed optimism about the collaboration's potential to enhance vessel safety and reliability while accelerating the introduction of new capabilities, ultimately improving operational efficiency and building a foundation for continuous vessel performance enhancement.

Vidar Dolonen emphasized the growing importance of software in modern vessels and the need for robust assurance approaches to support the adoption of SDV technologies throughout the vessel lifecycle, fostering confidence in the concept.
