‘Didn’t even realise I won’: Zverev explains US Open championship point moment

Alexander Zverev's US Open championship win over Ben Shelton remains a moment of surprise and silence for the champion. As Zverev clinched his second Grand Slam trophy, he was so immersed in the zone that he did not initially realize he had won. After a serve winner, Zverev dropped back behind the baseline, as though preparing to return. Realizing his mistake only came after he thought the score was 5-1.

Zverev's triumph over Shelton marked a significant achievement, as he became the first American man to win a Grand Slam title since Andy Roddick in 2003. Additionally, Zverev became the first Black player to secure a men's Grand Slam crown since Arthur Ashe in 1968. Despite the immense joy of his victory, Zverev acknowledged the crowd's strong support for Shelton, stating that he was sorry for any disappointment caused.
