Davey reignites international ambitions with Wales

Megan Davey, the Loughborough Lightning record appearance holder, has reignited her international rugby aspirations at the age of 26. Davey, who earned her first cap at 19 in 2021, previously considered a career in full-time teaching when she was omitted from Wales' 2026 Six Nations squad and training squad for the WXV Global Series. Despite feeling old and facing a voice inside her head, Davey received a call-up to join the 39-strong squad for the upcoming matches against South Africa, USA, and Japan.

Davey qualifies for Wales through her grandfather from Llanelli, although she initially went through the English pathway system as a youngster. She admits that being older now gives her a sense of pride and motivation to make her family and coaches proud. Despite being a latecomer, Davey has been welcomed by her teammates, who share a camaraderie and do not harbor animosity towards each other.

The half-back primarily trains at scrum-half for Wales, where she competes with Keira Bevan and Seren Lockwood. However, Davey emphasizes that the forwards have no ill will towards each other and support one another to perform their best. Wales opens their WXV campaign against South Africa on 18 September, which would mean a great deal to Davey, as playing international rugby is a privilege and a long-sought goal in her rugby journey.
