[COVER STORY] KB leadership change raises prospect of generational shift across financial sector

KB Financial Group's unexpected choice of Vice Chairman Lee Jae-keun as its next leader, rather than renewing Chairman Yang Jong-hee's tenure, is anticipated to spark a comprehensive reshaping of its subsidiaries' management structures, industry experts stated on Monday. The decision has also sparked discussions about whether the push for generational change may extend to other prominent financial holding companies in the sector.

KB Financial Group operates 54 subsidiary CEOs across the country's five largest financial institutions, all of whom face term expirations by the end of this year. Consequently, a significant wave of executive reshuffles is expected in the near future.

On Friday, KB Financial Group's chairman recommendation committee officially endorsed Lee Jae-keun as the final candidate for the chairmanship. This decision came as a surprise, as incumbent Chairman Yang Jong-hee, who was widely expected to secure a second term following record-breaking financial results, was not selected.

The age gap between the two candidates is notable. Lee Jae-keun was born in 1966, five years younger than Yang Jong-hee, who was born in 1961. The recommendation committee explained its decision by stating, "This is a critical juncture to execute bold institutional reforms and generational change."
