Canadian men beat Mexico to advance to continental volleyball championship semifinals

Moncton - Canada extended its winning streak to three consecutive matches on Sunday, securing a spot in Tuesday's NORCECA men's continental volleyball championship semifinals. Canada thrashed Mexico 25-15, 25-18, 25-20 at the Avenir Centre, clinching the top position in Group A with an unbeaten 3-0 record. Team Canada's captain Eric Loeppky expressed satisfaction with the victory, acknowledging there is room for improvement against upcoming opponents Cuba and the U.S. The Canadian team dominated blocks (13-2), aces (9-2), and attacks (35-32) against Mexico.

Sharpshooter Sharone Vernon-Evans led the scoring for Canada with 15 points, including four aces. Loeppky (12 points, eight kills, one block, and three aces) and Fynn McCarthy (11 points, six blocks) were also key contributors. Mexico finished Group A with a 2-1 record and will face Monday's quarterfinals. Canada's coach Dan Lewis noted Mexico applied considerable pressure but emphasized his team managed well, with Landon Currie playing a crucial role.

The United States, as the other pool winner, also advances to the semifinals. Eight teams compete for three spots at the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup in Poland, with the outcomes determining teams for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games qualification stage.
