At least five killed in head on collision along Gilgil-Nakuru highway

At least five people lost their lives in a head-on collision between a PSV bus and a Toyota IST on the Gilgil-Nakuru highway on Sunday night. The crash occurred around 11 p.m. in the Kamugunda area. The bus was en route from Gilgil to Nakuru when the driver allegedly strayed from his lane and entered the acceleration lane, leading to the fatal collision with the oncoming Toyota IST.

Four passengers in the Toyota IST, comprising two female adults and two juveniles, sustained fatal injuries and perished at the scene. The driver of the Toyota IST, initially seriously injured, was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph Hospital. The bodies were collected and transported to PNN Funeral Home for identification and postmortem examinations.

Both vehicles were subsequently towed to the police station yard for further inspection. This accident, among several reported on Sunday, contributed to a total of 16 deaths that night. The victims comprised five passengers, six pedestrians, four motorcyclists, and a driver. Amid rising fatalities involving pedestrians, authorities have intensified efforts to curb the issue, including the arrest of individuals who avoid using footbridges.

Fatal accidents in the country have seen a significant increase, with over 4,000 people losing their lives annually in separate incidents.
