AstraZeneca’s Etcamah trial misses primary endpoint

AstraZeneca has revealed that its Phase III clinical trial, SERENA-4, evaluating the effectiveness of Etcamah (camizestrant) in combination with palbociclib for first-line treatment of estrogen receptor-positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer, has failed to meet its primary endpoint of progression-free survival. The global study, which included 1,371 adult patients with Stage IV de novo or recurrent breast cancer, did not demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival when compared to the combination of an aromatase inhibitor, anastrozole, with palbociclib.

Despite the disappointment, AstraZeneca's Executive Vice President of Oncology Haematology R&D, Susan Galbraith, emphasized that the outcome highlights the importance of maximizing Etcamah's benefits for patients based on the results of the subsequent SERENA-6 trial.
