Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows

Apple's new Siri architecture has been found to be designed with a surprising level of compatibility for third-party AI models, according to code sleuth pdfu. The private frameworks in iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate reveal a mechanism called Model Delegation that enables Claude to function as a Siri extension, just like the existing ChatGPT extension.

When users enable the Claude extension, they can ask Siri to perform tasks like setting reminders, which Claude interprets and executes. In another demonstration, Claude was able to create a CSV file in response to a Siri request, a task Siri cannot handle itself. Furthermore, a second protocol in the Model Manager Services allows Apple's own server-side Siri model to be replaced by another model, such as GPT-5.6.

This means that ChatGPT can receive Siri's planner prompt and tool definitions, request system actions, and formulate responses that Siri presents using its own interface and voice. The European Union's Digital Markets Act may have influenced Apple's approach, requiring third-party access to iOS hardware and software features, including Siri.

Currently, the Ask... implementation is limited to the ChatGPT extension in macOS 27 Golden Gate Release Candidate, but Apple has not yet opened up the model delegation entitlement to third parties. This development shows the extent to which Apple has engineered Siri for future model interoperability.
