Anwar: BRICS not against other blocs, Malaysia pushing for fairer global order

Malaysia's participation in the 18th BRICS Leaders Summit is not aimed at opposing any other blocs, but rather advocating for a fairer international system and rules, stated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Malaysia intends to maintain strong relationships with key partners such as the United States, European Union, Australia, and others while pushing for the reform of outdated global structures.

Anwar clarified that BRICS and Asean are not at odds with other groups; instead, they seek to set fair rules and address the shortcomings of the UN system, which was established in 1945 and is perceived as outdated, unfair, and undemocratic.

Anwar emphasized that Malaysia must preserve good bilateral relations with the US but should not be impeded from expressing views vital for Malaysia, the region, and the world. He also pointed out that the international system, including the World Bank and IMF, must undergo review as certain aspects no longer align with contemporary needs and realities. Malaysia supports reducing reliance on the US dollar in trade, including utilizing local currencies for transactions between countries.

Regarding full BRICS membership, Anwar mentioned a moratorium is currently in place, but Malaysia's partner status enables participation in virtually all activities and mechanisms. The working mechanism does not restrict Malaysia from joining almost all activities, which it has indeed done. Malaysia officially became a BRICS partner country on January 1, 2025.

Anwar participated in the summit, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in New Delhi, where he delivered Malaysia's National Statement on Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.
