An NVIDIA RTX Pro 6000 Becomes The Latest Victim To The Melting 12VHPWR Cable

An NVIDIA RTX Pro 6000 GPU has succumbed to the perils of a 12VHPWR cable melting, marking yet another casualty of this unfortunate incident. The fortunate news is that the GPU itself managed to survive the catastrophe. However, the power supply unit (PSU) it was linked to did not fare as well, and in a particularly unfortunate turn of events, it was an ASRock-branded PSU.

A PC repair technician named ScientiaEtRatio91 shared their customer's unfortunate situation on the PC Master Race subreddit. Upon dismantling the system, they discovered that the 12VHPWR cable had failed catastrophically and melted at one end, where it was connected to the PSU. The good news is that both ends of the 12VHPWR cable were fully seated when the meltdown occurred.

It seems that the ASRock Taichi TC-1650T, a 1650W PSU, might not be the most reliable choice for powering high-performance GPUs. ASRock, known for its questionable history with certain motherboards, seems to be experiencing a bit of a rough patch with its power supply units as well. The PSU features a TempGuard feature and an NTC temperature sensor, which are designed to detect unsafe temperatures and shut down the system accordingly.

However, in this case, it failed to do so. Interestingly, this appears to be the second time an RTX Pro 6000 GPU has suffered a catastrophic failure with the same ASRock PSU. In March, the issue was at the GPU end, but the card still managed to function correctly, and ASRock replaced the damaged cable. Fortunately, the owner managed to avoid a hefty repair bill, as the RTX Pro 6000 GPU retails for around RM82,999.
