Accra-Kumasi Expressway to be operated and maintained for 50 years under state-owned company

The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is set to be operated and maintained for a period of 50 years under a government-owned company, as announced by Francis Ahlidza, the CEO of Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited. The company, established in 2025 following Parliament's approval of the concession for the project, will be responsible for both the construction and the subsequent 50-year operation and maintenance of the expressway.

Ahlidza explained that the company's role extends beyond construction, encompassing design, construction, and maintenance throughout the lifetime of the expressway. The primary revenue source for the company will be tolls collected from the expressway, which will be utilized to cover both construction and maintenance costs and ensure the road remains in optimal condition throughout its design life.

The company will be entrusted with maintaining and operating the facility, raising revenue through tolls, and ensuring the road remains at the required standard during its entire operational period. The project has progressed from the clearance and definition of the right of way by the Ghana Armed Forces to the procurement stage, where the designs have been finalized, and construction firms are being selected based on their ability to undertake the project.

Construction is slated to commence in January 2027, with the government expected to formally mark the start of construction by the end of 2026.
