ABS Joins Korean Initiative to Advance Standards for Next-Generation Ships and Shipyards

ABS has formed a partnership with three Korean maritime organizations to develop international standards for advanced ships and shipyards. The Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute, Korean Offshore & Shipbuilding Association, and Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding have joined ABS in a five-year initiative. This collaboration aims to establish global benchmarks for vessels and shipyards that utilize digital technology, smart manufacturing, and advanced maritime systems.

ABS is also currently supporting the creation of preliminary standards in two key areas: digital production and traceability requirements for additively manufactured shipboard components, as well as vent mast design for hydrogen-fueled ships. The company's Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Patrick Ryan, explained that next-generation shipbuilding is progressing swiftly, and international standards for smart ships, shipyards, and advanced manufacturing are still in development.

ABS's long-standing relationships with Korea's shipbuilding sector make this agreement particularly valuable in creating the necessary standards for the industry.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) is an extension of an earlier agreement between ABS and the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards to advance international standardization in smart ship and shipyard technologies. This further demonstrates ABS's growing engagement with Korea's maritime sector, including recent cooperation with Korean and U.S. institutions through the Korea-U.S.

Shipbuilding Partnership Center. ABS's involvement in this partnership is driven by the recognition that international standards are crucial for market entry and global competitiveness.

Joo-Hyoung Choi, Managing Director of KOMERI, highlighted the importance of combining Korea's standardization capabilities with ABS's classification experience, expecting to produce practical results that lower barriers for Korean equipment manufacturers entering overseas markets. ABS is committed to supporting the standards and safety frameworks needed for the maritime industry as new technologies move from development to real-world application.
