A peep into Kano economic city

Kano is indisputably the commercial hub of business ventures in northern Nigeria, as the state strives to cement its influence as the epicenter of commerce and the go-to business destination. A prime illustration of the state's aspirations is the Kano Economic City project, which is expected to spur innovation and competitiveness upon completion.

Spanning 117 hectares of land, this vast urbanization project encompasses 80,000 square meters of warehouse space and 12,000 shops and stalls, poised to transform commercial dynamics in the ancient city by alleviating congestion in prime areas.

The Kano Economic City's pharmaceutical market, dubbed the Coordinated Wholesale Centre, boasts duplex suites, customized warehouses, and loading bays, alongside a textile market with a food court and pay toilets. A logistics hub, Kanawa Container Terminal, and KEC arena, replete with parking spaces, accommodations, trailer park facilities, and pay toilets, also form integral components of the development.

Upon completion, the pharmaceutical market, known as the Coordinated Wholesale Centre, will house 384 shops per block, while the pending Kanawa Pharmaceutical market comprises 384 shops in total.

The Kano Economic City project is spearheaded by Brains and Hammers, who assumed control in 2017 and have navigated the project to its current form despite delays and inactivity. The ICT hub, the GSM market, and the textile market are currently in advanced stages of development, with the latter slated to host an annual shopping festival to attract interest from stakeholders across Nigeria and beyond.

A modern police station and an NSCDC outpost are also integrated into the project, ensuring security and order within the market precincts. With an anticipated 500,000 direct and indirect jobs created during its operational lifespan, the Kano Economic City project represents a significant stride towards urban development and the revitalization of commercial activities in Kano.
