4 More Ghanaian Languages Developed – – BGL Boss

The Bureau of Ghana Languages (BGL) has developed four new Ghanaian languages, Ahanta, Konkomba, Kusasi, and Sisala, for use in schools, bringing the total to 16 indigenous languages. The Executive Director, Ebenezer Ahiator, emphasized that the Bureau's role is to promote, preserve and develop these languages. The orthographies of the four languages have been launched and are ready for use in schools, but further steps are needed before teaching can begin.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, Ghana Education Service, and Ministry of Education must establish the necessary structures, such as curricula, textbooks, and teaching materials. Ahiator stressed the need for teacher training and support for language exams. The development involved traditional rulers, academics, and community stakeholders, generating excitement among locals.

The Bureau aims to develop three more languages before the year ends, despite challenges. The Executive Director clarified that the Bureau advises the government on language matters but does not have the authority to set official language policy. He also dismissed allegations of ethnic bias in his comments on the national language debate, stating that his position is based on data and what Ghanaians want.
