2027: Two Reps, ex-lawmaker defect to APP, clinch NASS tickets

The Action Peoples Party (APP) announced on Monday the defection of three Nigerian lawmakers to the party, which is anticipated to bolster its political structure and campaign for the upcoming 2027 general elections. The lawmakers joining the APP are Boma Goodhead, a serving representative from the Akuku-Toru/Asari-Toru Federal Constituency of Rivers State; Alozie Ikechi, a serving representative from the Obingwa/Ugwunagbo/Osisioma Federal Constituency of Abia State; and Uju Chima, a former representative from the Oguta/Ohaji-Egbema/Oru West Federal Constituency of Imo State.

The defection is viewed as a significant boost for the APP as they prepare for the national elections. APP chieftain and House of Representatives member, Ikenga Ugochinyere, described the development as a major addition to the party ahead of the 2027 elections. Ugochinyere welcomed the three newly defected lawmakers, emphasizing that the party aims to bring a new approach to governance, advocating for the people's interests.

He noted that APP is a platform for independent-minded, new-generation politicians who seek to change old ways for a new way that is dominated by the people's interests.

Goodhead, who represented the Akuku-Toru/Asari-Toru Federal Constituency of Rivers State, was disqualified from contesting the party’s primaries in May 2026, thus denying him a return ticket by the All Progressives Congress. In March 2026, Ikechi was among the 46-member Congress and Convention Committee for the Labour Party's membership re-registration exercise. In February 2023, Chima narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt, which the PDP described as an attempt by armed agents in Imo State to assassinate him.
