2027 AFCONQ: Sports Minister and NSA DG inspect Accra Sports Stadium ahead of Ghana v Gambia game

On Friday, September 11, Sports Minister Kofi Adams and NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah visited the Accra Sports Stadium in preparation for Ghana's participation in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The inspection was carried out to evaluate the stadium's capacity to host international football matches. This inspection transpired prior to the Black Stars' 1-1 draw against FC Diarra in the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round at the same venue.

The Accra Sports Stadium is planned to host the Black Stars' second Group C qualifier against The Gambia on September 29, at 16:00 GMT. This inspection comes as the condition of the stadium has been under scrutiny in recent times, with MP Dickson Kyere-Duah describing it as a "death trap" after his own inspection. These concerns have added to the pressure on the Sports Ministry, NSA, and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to ensure the stadium meets the necessary CAF and FIFA standards.

The inspection was attended by GFA Deputy General Secretary Alex Asante. Meanwhile, Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz is anticipated to return to Ghana this week for a pre-match briefing and to announce his squad for the upcoming two AFCON qualifiers. Ghana will commence their Group C campaign away at Côte d'Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on September 24. The match will be followed by a home game against The Gambia three days later as they aim to qualify for the 2027 tournament.
