1,200 exhibitors from 95 countries at Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2026

A new book, From the History of Diving and Pearling in Abu Dhabi, delves into the lives of divers, merchants, vessels, and tools that shaped the economic and social landscape of Abu Dhabi and the UAE before the nation's modernization. Launched at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, the publication is authored by Juma bin Thalith Al Humairi and documents the significance of pearling in the region's history.

The book covers topics such as Dalma Island's role in pearling, notable diving captains and merchants, preparations for the diving season, traditional vessels and tools, diving grounds, and the pearl trade. It also explores the dangers faced by divers, traditional maritime poetry, and the connections between Abu Dhabi and other Gulf nations.

Dr. Abdullah Majid Al Ali, Director-General of the National Archives and Library, emphasized that diving and pearling were more than just professions but integral components of a broader economy that supported families and communities. The book forms part of the NAL's mission to document the UAE's history and make historical information accessible to researchers and future generations.

Visitors to the book fair can explore the UAE's maritime history through the "Memory of the Sea… Story of a Nation" exhibit, which showcases historical photographs, documents, maps, and maritime objects, including tools used by pearl divers.
