Zverev holds off Shelton to win US Open title

Alexander Zverev clinched the US Open title with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-2 victory over Ben Shelton in Sunday's men's singles final, finally ending a bitter history of defeats at Flushing Meadows. The top-seeded German, who narrowly missed a US Open crown in 2020 to Dominic Thiem, added the trophy to the French Open title he secured this year.

Zverev denied Shelton the opportunity to become the first US man in 23 years to win a Grand Slam trophy. The 23-year-old Shelton, just a month away from his first birthday when Andy Roddick last won the US Open in 2003, had high hopes after his dramatic five-set quarter-final win against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and his comeback victory over fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals.

However, Zverev's all-court skills proved too formidable, overcoming Shelton's resilient effort throughout the match, despite the support of a star-studded crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
