Yong Hye-in quits as gender minister nominee amid criticism

Rep. Yong Hye-in of the Basic Income Party announced on Sunday that she would be withdrawing her nomination for the position of Minister of Gender Equality and Family, effectively ending a two-week period of controversy surrounding her decision. In a press conference at the National Assembly, Yong stated that she was relinquishing her personal commitment to establish a gender-equal society for all under the administration of President Lee Jae Myung.

She cited opposition within her own party, the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), as the primary reason for her decision. Yong explained that serving as a cabinet member while also representing the Assembly would be challenging, given the concerns expressed by even members of her own ruling party. She emphasized that stepping down was necessary to maintain the unity of the DPK, Basic Income Party, and the broader democratic progressive coalition.

Yong also criticized the main opposition People Power Party (PPP), accusing them of abetting the controversy.
