Umno wants freedom to rebuild before GE16 pacts, say analysts

Analysts are cautioning Umno leaders against entering binding political agreements prior to the 2026 general election, arguing such pacts would weaken the party's bargaining position and make it difficult for Umno to rebuild its electoral base. Awang Azman Pawi, a Universiti Malaya professor, contends that a definitive pact could trap Umno into an unfair seat allocation, making it reliant on its allies rather than focusing on regaining its own electoral strength.

He asserts that Umno's ultimate strategy should be to regain its independent electoral value, making other parties eager to collaborate with it due to its strength.

The Malaysian political landscape is characterized by non-uniformed state politics, making a consistent pact across all regions impractical. A potential Umno-PAS alliance might be successful in specific states, but it could hinder Umno's ability to perform well in mixed seats or maintain ties with parties in Sabah and Sarawak. Hisommuddin Bakar, CEO of Ilham Centre, warns that binding agreements would limit Umno's capacity to rebuild in Malay heartland seats, which are predominantly held by Perikatan Nasional. Without proof of improved support, Umno may find itself at a disadvantage when negotiating seats.

Deputy President Mohamad Hasan stated that any cooperation aimed at Malay unity must remain flexible, and Umno does not have to be part of a new coalition, remaining within the Barisan Nasional (BN) indefinitely. Johor Umno Youth chief Noor Azleen Ambrose went further, asserting that Umno should not be bound to any party at the state or federal level post-election.

He reflects the discontent of grassroots Malays with the unity government formed after the 2015 election. However, Hisommuddin emphasizes that Umno's remarks should be interpreted as a desire to maintain autonomy within existing arrangements, not a rejection of coalition politics. He believes Umno can still partner with other parties for immediate political needs, but these alliances should not become the sole source of the party's survival.
