Twenty-five years in the waiting - Coventry's nightmare top-flight return

Coventry City have endured a miserable return to the Premier League, marking their worst start to a season since 1919-20, following their 5-0 defeat to Brighton in their opening match. The Sky Blues are only the fifth team in English top-flight history to lose each of their first four games without scoring a single goal, a feat previously achieved by Derby County, Stoke City, Preston North End, and Crystal Palace.

Despite an early promising performance against Manchester City, which saw them nearly earn a point with 12 shots and an xG of 1.37, Coventry's form has rapidly declined. They have now lost their last 46 Premier League matches when conceding first, a run that stretches back to March 1999. Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane expressed concern over Coventry's defending, stating that the team appeared more like a Championship side than a Premier League side.

Frank Lampard, who took charge of the club in November 2024, acknowledged the pressure the team is under, stating that they must raise their performance levels to compete at this level. Despite the difficult start, Lampard emphasized the need for the players to continue working hard and take responsibility for improving their performance.
