Trump reiterates support for united Ireland, says won’t talk about Scotland ’yet’

DOONBEG, Ireland - U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his backing for Northern Ireland's separation from the United Kingdom to unify with the Republic of Ireland on Sunday, though he declined to discuss Scotland's potential independence at the moment. During a visit to Dublin, Trump expressed his enthusiasm for Irish unity, stating it would be natural for the two regions to come together.

He added that he would reserve comments on Scotland for a future time. Trump's remarks came after a meeting with Ireland's Prime Minister Micheal Martin, who dismissed the reaction from some unionist politicians as an overreaction. Martin noted that they discussed Northern Ireland's relationship with the Republic of Ireland and the peace process that ended three decades of conflict in 1998. Martin reiterated his support for unity but acknowledged that it may not occur in the near future.
