‘The Pitt’ Star Katherine LaNasa Says Early Breast Cancer Detection Saved Her Life

Emmy-winning actress Katherine LaNasa, known for her role as "Nurse Dana" on HBO Max's The Pitt, recently shared her experience with early breast cancer detection. LaNasa, 59 years old, was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer after a routine mammogram in February 2023. Initially, she felt healthy and confident, highlighting the importance of regular screenings despite personal intuition about one's health.

LaNasa underwent surgery and radiation treatment, experiencing complications for about six months. Despite the challenges, she emphasized the value of early detection, as women who catch breast cancer early have a 99% five-year relative survival rate. LaNasa advocates for regular mammograms, noting that only 1 in 2 eligible women currently gets them annually.

Experts agree that various barriers prevent women from getting regular screenings, including time constraints, financial constraints, transportation issues, and fear of pain and treatment outcomes. Francisco Esteva, MD, a chief of hematology & medical oncology at Northwell’s Lenox Hill Hospital, highlighted the importance of addressing these barriers and the role of emotional support in overcoming fears associated with cancer.

LaNasa teamed up with Novartis’ Your Attention, Please campaign to share her story, encouraging women to get annual screenings, understand their personal risk, and appreciate the significance of early detection. She also reflected on how her cancer journey influenced her portrayal of Nurse Dana on The Pitt, emphasizing the compassion and kindness she witnessed from healthcare professionals during her treatment, which she incorporated into her character.
