Thailand builds 8.4km border wall after clashes with Cambodia

A concrete fence topped with looping barbed wire stretches for 8.4 kilometers along the Thai-Cambodia border, marking a new stage in Thailand's efforts to secure its eastern border following deadly clashes with Cambodia. Standing 3.6 meters high and made of reinforced concrete, galvanized steel, and barbed wire, the barrier cuts through farmland in Chanthaburi province.

Captain Prachya Hantiem, commander of the Royal Thai Navy Marine Task Force in Chanthaburi, expressed that the fence was built to prevent illegal activities, particularly the smuggling of people and goods. The two nations have been embroiled in disputes over the demarcation of their 800-kilometer border for decades, and deadly clashes erupted in July and December last year. Although a ceasefire agreement was signed in late December, both sides continue to accuse each other of truce violations.

Near the fence, a small Thai village with fewer than 200 residents grows corn and fruit. While villagers acknowledge the structure's impact on their farmland, they express a sense of security in their daily lives, as their plantations are located along the porous border.

The border between Thailand and Cambodia, largely drawn up during negotiations between Thailand, then known as Siam, and France during the French colonial era, has been a source of tension between the two nations. Gates through the new wall have been designed to accommodate existing multilingual stone markers inscribed with the words "Siam" and "frontiere," which means border in French.

While the wall may cause some disruption, the village chief acknowledged that the community had to adapt to the situation. Captain Prachya emphasized that the structure is entirely within Thai sovereignty and is subject to inspections by Cambodian forces. The recent clashes have had a significant impact on the lives of villagers, particularly those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
