Strike on Iranian cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz kills 1, Iranian media say

An Iranian cargo ship was attacked early Sunday off Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state media. The attack resulted in one death and four injuries, reigniting discussions about the strait's control. Qeshm Island, situated 14 miles from Bandar Abbas, plays a crucial role in Iran's efforts to manage shipping in the region. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian vowed that Iran would not be intimidated, stating, "Our people can't be bullied into submission. Iran won't surrender."

The U.S., which has targeted Iranian-flagged vessels during its blockade of Iranian ports, remained silent on the incident. Meanwhile, Iran postponed a plan to brief neighboring countries about its controversial shipping management strategy. Oman's foreign minister, Badr Albusaidi, announced that the meeting was postponed "in the interests of consensus."

This development follows Iran-backed Houthi rebels capturing an island in the Red Sea, intensifying threats to shipping in the region. Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been minimal due to ongoing attacks. The U.S. has assured that sufficient oil is reaching markets, aided by its military guiding ships along Oman's coast, despite the risk of being targeted.
