Some Dutch people are about to be more equal than others

The Dutch government's stance on dual citizenship has sparked controversy, with the VVD party opposing the idea. SNBN, a foundation advocating for Dutch nationals living abroad, held an annual campaign day in The Hague, discussing a proposed legislation that would allow Dutch expats to retain their nationality while adopting a second one.

The legislation, which has been around for nearly ten years, was initially debated in June but was postponed to October and then again to December 7. The CDA party also shares the VVD's stance, favoring stricter adherence to Dutch nationality. While some Dutch citizens, such as long-term residents and children born in the country, can retain their original passports alongside Dutch nationality, this privilege is not extended to new Dutch citizens.

Legal experts argue that allowing dual citizenship for some, but not others, would be discriminatory and conflict with the Dutch constitution. The debate surrounding dual citizenship in the Netherlands is more about the loyalty of immigrant groups and the anti-foreigner sentiment permeating Dutch society.
