Shearer defends Awoniyi after Brighton red

Former Premier League star Alan Shearer has come to the defense of Taiwo Awoniyi following the striker's red card during Coventry City's 5-0 loss to Brighton at the CBS Arena on Sunday. Awoniyi received a straight red card in the second half for an elbow that connected with Brighton defender Maxim de Cuyper, leaving Coventry City without a goal in their fourth consecutive game.

Shearer questioned the severity of the red card, arguing that the contact seemed to occur as both players were battling for the ball and that swinging his arm naturally while competing for the ball did not necessarily amount to violent conduct. He also pointed out that the referee did not initially show Awoniyi a red card, but instead opted to review the incident using VAR, which should have provided ample time and angles to determine if the elbowed was intentional.

Shearer was particularly troubled by the fact that the decision resulted in the most severe punishment possible, despite the fact that the contact did not appear to be premeditated. The defeat left Coventry City at the bottom of the Premier League table after four games, with Awoniyi now facing a three-game ban, which will keep him out of their upcoming matches against Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and Newcastle.
