Sarawak extends school closures in Serian, Lubok Antu until haze improves

KUCHING, September 13 — The Sarawak State Education Department has extended the temporary closure of schools in Serian and Lubok Antu districts until the Air Pollutant Index readings in both areas fall below 200. This decision was made after monitoring API readings through the Department of Environment's official portal, the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System, and reports from the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

While primary and secondary schools under the supervision of 12 District Education Offices will continue as usual from Monday, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency, plans to distribute face masks to students, teachers, and staff at schools severely affected by the haze. The department's priority remains the welfare, health, and safety of students, especially during hot and unpredictable weather.

If the API reading exceeds 100, outdoor activities involving students must be halted. When it exceeds 200, schools in the affected area or district must close. If it exceeds 500, teachers and staff are exempt from reporting for duty. Schools may remain closed if the API reading falls below 200. Parents may keep their children at home if they are concerned about their health, but must inform the school.

Temporary school closures could also be made based on recommendations from the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee, depending on developments. Schools are advised to monitor activities that expose students to hot or hazy conditions, ensure clean drinking water, and encourage students to wear face masks and drink water to regulate body temperature.

The department urges the public and parents to obtain the latest information on school operations through official channels.
