Saibaba event: Another former TISS student gets Mumbai Police notice

In a recent development related to the case of a gathering held at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to mark the death anniversary of former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba, the Mumbai Police has issued a notice to another former student. This follows the grant of bail to a 30-year-old former TISS student, who was arrested on October 12, 2025, for his alleged participation in the gathering.

The court had earlier dismissed allegations of any connection to Maoist or anti-national ideology, citing lack of material evidence. The incident came to light after an associate dean filed a complaint, alleging that nine TISS students gathered without permission to pay homage to Saibaba. Saibaba, convicted in 2017 on Maoist charges, was later acquitted by the Bombay High Court in 2024.

The nine students, who filed anticipatory bail pleas, saw seven granted interim protection while two were denied bail. Among the two denied bail, one was subsequently arrested. The Mumbai Police accused the two of raising slogans advocating for the release of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, and found downloaded Maoist-era books and other materials in their possession.
