Russian athletes appeal for end to World Athletics ban

Russian athletes have taken legal action to challenge the World Athletics ban on their participation in international competitions. In an open letter to key sporting bodies, athletes argue that more than four years of exclusion has devastated their careers, stating that "Four years is a long time in any life. In an athlete's life, it can be the most significant years."

The World Athletics Council maintained the sanctions against Russian and Belarusian athletes, imposed following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Russian Athletics challenged the decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport and lodged a further appeal last month. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe reiterated the federation's stance, emphasizing that the ban is about "the integrity of competition."

Coe acknowledged the desire to see a full global participation in athletics, but stressed that collective punishment is out of step with other sports federations that have reintegrated Russian and Belarusian athletes under neutral status. The Russian athletes claim their federation's stance amounts to collective punishment and stands apart from other international sports federations.

They have asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport for permission to participate in appeal proceedings, but have yet to receive a response. The prolonged uncertainty is taking a personal toll on the athletes, who wrote, "A legal or institutional process can continue for years. An athlete's career cannot."
