Rumesh Pathirage registers another throw above 90m to win World Ultimate C’ships

Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Pathirage secured another victory at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships on Sunday, achieving a throw of 91.09 meters in the final attempt. Anderson Peters of Grenada secured the second place with a throw of 86.18 meters, while German athlete Julian Weber finished third with 85.89 meters. Pathirage is currently the most dominant javelin thrower of the season, having won 11 out of his 12 competitions before participating in the Budapest event.

Prior to the championship, Pathirage had set a world-leading throw of 92.62 meters in Rome and followed it up with a 92.07-meter victory in Zurich. In Budapest, he struggled in the first round, throwing 75.89 meters, while Weber took the lead with a throw of 84.09 meters, surpassing the 80-meter mark. Meanwhile, the European champion secured a position at the top with a throw of 85.69 meters in the third attempt, allowing Pathirage to take the lead.

The championship format has been updated this year, with the top four athletes participating in the final round after three throws. Going first in the final round, Pathirage delivered a dramatic 91.09-meter throw, marking his third 90+ meter throw of the season and guaranteeing himself another title. Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem finished fifth with a season-best throw of 81.49 meters, hinting at a promising future for him at the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi Nagoya, Japan, starting September 19.
