Remembering Taib Andak, the man who helped build Felda

The late Taib Andak, a visionary leader and dedicated public servant, played a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia's rural landscape since the establishment of the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) in 1956. As Felda's first Malayan chairman, Taib's leadership laid the foundation for the agency's success, which was marked by the creation of over 100 land schemes across the country.

Among those who benefited from his work was Felda's first oil palm settlement, named in his honor - the Felda Taib Andak scheme in Kulai, Johor. Taib's integrity was unmatched; he would not accept hamper gifts during Hari Raya from clients, instead insisting they return all chocolates. Known for his strong work ethic, Taib often undertook long journeys to establish Felda land schemes himself, with his daughter Kalsom accompanying him to help him stay awake during drives.

As a close friend and advisor to then Prime Minister Abdul Razak Hussein, Taib's collaboration with the prime minister played a crucial role in executing the vision of creating jobs and land for the jobless and landless. Kalsom Taib, now 84, reflects on her father's life and contributions, expressing regret that his legacy is overshadowed by Felda's current controversies.

She believes that the departure from the strong values and principles her father upheld has adversely affected the agency's performance. For Kalsom, the most enduring aspect of her father's legacy is the opportunities he helped create that continue to transform lives for Felda settlers, enabling their children to pursue higher education and successful careers.
