Qatar advances plans to expand recreational spaces

Doha, Qatar - The Ministry of Municipality has achieved 94% progress in developing the National Strategy for Open and Recreational Areas, a major project focused on expanding recreational spaces, enhancing green infrastructure, and improving urban quality across Qatar. This initiative is highlighted in the Ministry's 2025 Annual Achievement Report, showcasing ongoing efforts to create an integrated and sustainable urban planning framework tailored to the nation's future growth needs.

The strategy aims to create a comprehensive framework for open spaces, recreational activities, and sports facilities. It involves establishing new recreational destinations, a national network of green corridors, and strengthening the country's urban environment. The Urban Planning Affairs Sector is actively enhancing public space quality and functionality, ensuring recreational and green areas become integral components of Qatar's urban development.

Another significant achievement was the Smart Rainwater Monitoring Project, which is 99.8% complete. This project involves creating a unified network for rainwater level measurement, establishing a standardized shared database among relevant entities in Qatar, and supporting better planning and management of rainwater resources.

The ministry has also completed 100% of the GCC Design Standards Manual, which contributes to common design standards and consistency in planning and design practices across GCC countries. Additionally, the Hydrogeological Assessment Project for Qatar is 96% complete, focusing on studying groundwater systems, their geological impact, and long-term sustainability.

The sector has also made strides in developing planning requirements and standards for small plots within urban centers, ensuring proper integration into existing urban areas. The Green Belt Development Strategy is 92% complete, supporting green infrastructure and environmental integration into urban planning. The Green Roof Planning Standards Manual has been completed, establishing guidelines for sustainable development and environmental performance of the built environment.

Other notable achievements include the Commercial Activities Classification Guide for Urban Centres, the GCC Urban Design Guide, and regulations governing desert houses (Bait Al Bar) incorporated into the Building Code. The ministry's efforts aim to integrate urban planning with sustainable development, modernize Qatar's urban planning system, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and create more sustainable, connected, and liveable urban environments aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030.
