Punjab govt bans gatherings until Sept 17 citing threats of 'possible terrorist activities'

The Punjab government announced on Sunday a ban on all gatherings in the province until September 17, citing credible reports of multiple threats from terrorist organizations and hostile intelligence agencies. These threats included the possibility of suicide bombers, vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices, and targeted killings during large public gatherings.

The Home Department imposed the ban under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, following requests from Punjab police chief, the Counter-Terrorism Department, Special Branch of Punjab Police, and multiple district administrations for immediate preventive measures. The ban applies to processions or assemblies of five or more people in public places, roads, highways, and open spaces, but exemptions include marriage ceremonies, funeral prayers, mosque prayers, courts, and official government events.

Carrying, displaying, or brandishing weapons at public places is also prohibited. The Jamaat-i-Islami, which has been protesting a petroleum levy, is not affected by the ban.
