Norris pulls off ‘masterpiece’ lap to snatch pole in Madrid

Lando Norris delivered a "masterpiece" lap, securing pole position for McLaren in the Spanish Grand Prix's qualifying session with a remarkable time that narrowly edged out championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes by just 0.011 seconds. The 20-year-old Italian driver finished ahead of world champion Norris by the same margin.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull secured third place, 0.140 seconds behind Norris, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, and George Russell, the second Mercedes driver, were fifth and sixth respectively. The Spanish Grand Prix will be held on an ultra-demanding, high-risk hybrid circuit known as Madring. McLaren team chief Andrea Stella praised Norris's lap as a "masterpiece" and one of the best in his career.

Norris himself expressed shock and pride at his performance, highlighting how everything came together flawlessly during the last lap. Despite the intense qualifying session, Verstappen remained positive about his result, stating that it was a great qualifying for his team. Norris's pole position marks his third this year and his 19th overall, giving him a strong chance of securing a third win of the season at this challenging street circuit.
